Heroic
"Whatever happened to all the heroes?
All the Shakespearoes?
They watched their Rome burn
Whatever happened to the heroes?
Whatever happened to all the heroes?
No more heroes any more"
-The Stranglers-No More Heroes, 1977
"I wish you could swim
Like the dolphins
Like the dolphins can swim
Though nothing
Though nothing will keep us together
We can beat them
For ever and ever
Oh we can be heroes
Just for one day"
-David Bowie-Heroes, 1977
"Turn left up the street
nothing but grey concrete and dead beats
[..]
where're you from?
what's you on and what's your story
[..]
'cos me and you are the same
I've known you my whole life, I don't know your name
m'name's European Bob, sorted anyway,
gonna have a dance now
see ya later
pleased to meet ya likewise, a pleasure
[..]
imagine the worlds leaders on pills
and imagine the morning after
wars causing disaster
don't talk to me, I don't know ya
for this ain't tomorrow for now
I still love ya
[..]
I realize five years went by and I'm older
memories smoulder, winter's colder
but that same piano loops over and over and over
the road shines and the rain washes away
[..]
We were just standing there minding our own
We went on and on we all smile, we all sing
Weak become heroes and the stars align
We all smile, we all sing, all sing"
-The Streets-Weak Become Heroes, 2002

Αν και τιμώ τους Στραγγαλιστές, κι ο Bowie είναι, βέβαια, σπουδαίος (let’s swim like the dolphins-majestic), εδώ την ποίηση την γράφει ο Mike Skinner (aka The Streets).
Πως ένας νέος από το Birmingham αναφέρεται στη γενιά του και μεγαλουργεί, πατώντας πάνω σε beats, με γλώσσα κάτι-πέρα-από-το-hip-hop: κι όμως, αποτυπώνει τόσο ζωντανά τη ζωή μακριά από το Λονδίνο, τους γκρίζους δρόμους, τα πρώτα πάρτυ, τα πρώτα e, the road shines and the rain washes away..
“ 'cos me and you are the same
I've known you my whole life, I don't know your name”
phew..
