1. John Roberts-Fences [Dial]

'Fences' is informed by the effects of travel on the brain: a collaged symphony of recorded violins, cellos, cracked guitars, detuned pianos, faded samples, broken drum machines and manipulated answering machine cassettes.

"I recorded waves on a beach in Cannes, a parade in Tokyo, synthesizers in Berlin, tourists in Versailles, a cedar soaking tub overflowing in Kyoto."

Plucked and bowed strings reverberate densely through thick air against weighted persian rugs, while the voices of white-lacquered synthesizers cry out along the marble tiles of empty palace corridors; yellowed nylon guitar strings are rhythmically pounded against microphones between the mirrored walls of a hotel bathroom, their distorted signals captured and warmed on VHS cassettes before being ejected and thrown into the brackish water of a worn bathtub. Gathered and dried off, these aural relics are patched together into a delicate piecemeal - patent leather next to cashmere next to plastic next to lace.

Pop songs are gutted and disemboweled before eventually being given a new skin of collaged features stretched tightly across their frames; the tired bones of dance music are stamped and shattered into shards, melted and re-pressed into pleasurable moments of introspection spotted with outbursts of anthemic extroversion. 

This is music from the forgotten film scores of discarded laser discs; the sound of memories re-quilted into slabs and thin-sliced into patterns which, when played back, conjure visions of the past and materialize impossible moments of Déjà vu for instances of the future not yet experienced.

Ο πιο παράξενος δίσκος της χρονιάς. Ατμόσφαιρα ανάλογη του 'R.I.P.' του Actress, house από μια άλλη διάσταση, απόκοσμη ambient. Όπως έγραψε κάποιος σε ένα σχόλιο "music for the space between sofa and wall". Can't get enough.

Δεν είχα πάει ποτέ στην Κρήτη, ένας συνδυασμός του "δεν έτυχε" και "μπορεί και να την αποφεύγω, δεν ξέρω". Μια υποχρέωση με έστειλε εκεί το καλοκαίρι, και υπήρξε ένα διάστημα που είχα χρόνο να τριγυρνώ μόνος, στην απέλπιδα προσπάθεια που συνήθως κάνω να προλάβω να δω 100 μέρη σε τρεις μέρες. Εκείνο το απόγευμα αφού είχα προλάβει να δω 4 ή 5 παραλίες σερί κι ενώ ήδη περνούσε η ώρα, αποφάσισα να ακούσω τις προτροπές φίλων και να ψάξω την παραλία-νούμερο 3-καλύτερη-της-Νότιας-Κρήτης. Λάθος βέβαια γιατί ήταν στου διαόλου το district, πίσω από 7.000 στροφές και ανάμεσα από χωριουδάκια των 2,5 σπιτιών, μετά από αναβάσεις και καταβάσεις δρόμων χωρίς καμία πινακίδα και σίγουρης επιστροφής από διαδρομές χωρίς φώτα κι ανύπαρκτο GPS (σήμα; γελάω). Αφού κατέληξα αρχικά στη λάθος παραλία κι ενώ ήδη έπεφτε ο ήλιος, κατάφερα να βρω τους περίφημους αμμόλοφους πίσω απ'τους οποίους θα μου αποκαλυπτόταν το θαύμα: η παραλία ήταν άδεια, φυσούσε, τα κύματα είχαν φέρει τόνους από φύκια και τα νερά θύμιζαν λασπόλουτρα. Στην άκρη της μόνο διέκρινα δύο άντρες που περιέργως έμοιαζαν σαν να συζητάνε κάποιο σοβαρό επαγγελματικό θέμα, και προσπάθησα να διώξω τη σκέψη "τώρα που νυχτώνει αν συμβεί κάτι και δε βρω το αμάξι ανεβαίνοντας τον αμμόλοφο, την έκατσα". Η τυχαία επιλογή στο iPod ήταν το 'Tomorrow's Harvest', κι ω, τι έκπληξη, το εξώφυλλο ξεδιπλωνόταν μπροστά μου, χωρίς τους ουρανοξύστες και τις πολυκατοικίες. Η μαγεία του 'Jacquard Causeway'. Ποιος θα το'λεγε, για ένα γκρουπ που οι καλύτερες στιγμές τους βρίσκονταν δύο δεκαετίες πίσω; Στην επιστροφή ανέβασα πυρετό.

Το εξώφυλλο του 'R Plus Seven' είναι από αυτήν εδώ την ταινία του Georges Schwizgebel, απ'το (δυστυχώς μακρινό πια) 1982


 

Η όλη αισθητική του άλμπουμ πάει χέρι χέρι με το φιλμάκι, κι η weirdo μουσική που ακούγεται στην ταινία είναι ο σύνδεσμος με τα καλώδια που υπάρχουν στο κεφάλι του Daniel Lopatin. Οι πειραματισμοί των '70s, μουσική από τηλεοπτικά σποτάκια των '80s, το 'Planete Sauvage' του Alain Goraguer, musique concrete, παύσεις και διακοπτόμενα σήματα, μεταλλικές ανάσες από σκουριασμένα Roland. Η επόμενη πίστα του 'Replica'.
